No fewer than 17 people have been killed in two separate fatal crashes that occurred in Bauchi State on Tuesday, 13 March, The PUNCH reports.

Seventeen others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crashes that involved 35 people.

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corp in Bauchi State, Yusuf Abdullahi, confirmed the crashes to our correspondent on Tuesday.

The first crash occurred at Manaba Village along Zaki-Gamawa road in Bauchi State involving a Toyota Hummer Bus which had 25 people in it and was driven by one Haruna Yusuf.

He said the lone fatal crash which involved a commercial bus conveying 25 people was caused by overloading, over speeding and tyre burst.

Abdullahi said the accident “occurred on Monday, 13th March, 2023 at about 10.30am.

“We were informed shortly afterwards and our men rushed to the scene within nine minutes for a rescue operation.

“As as they got there, they immediately rushed the victims to the General Hospital Gamawa by a Joint Task Force comprising the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp who were on patrol at Bursali Ward in Zaki Local Government Area, for confirmation and treatment.

“It was at the hospital that a medical doctor confirmed 11 people, two male adults and nine female adults. Those who suffered various degrees of injuries are 13 in number, comprising three male adults and 10 female adults.”

The FRSC Boss said that the second crash also occurred on Tuesday, 13th March, 2023 at about 5.21pm at about 10 kilometres from Yana town, along Yana-Giade Road in Shira LGA.

He said the fatal crash involved two commercial vehicles, a Volkswagen Golf with registration number: SHR 203 AA driven by one Alh. Bappha Adamu Nasarawa and a Volkswagen Sharon bus, a political party vehicle with no registration number.

The crash was caused by over speeding. There were 10 adults, eight male adults and two female adults involved in the incident.

The men of the Nigeria Police Force who arrived at the scene, rushed the victims to the Ambara General Hospital for medication and death confirmation.

“At the hospital, a medical doctor confirmed six people, four male adults and two female adults, dead. The remaining four male adults sustained varying degrees of injuries,” he said.

Abdullahi appealed to motorists to always drive within the approved speed limits and urged them to observe the road traffic rules and regulations.
